How to install Google Analytics

Glowtify needs Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to see what happens on the site after visitors click a post, an ad, or an email. GA4 is a free tool from Google. It records page views, referrers, and events on the site.

This article covers what to do if the site does not have GA4 yet. Once GA4 is installed and running, connect it to Glowtify with the Google Analytics connector.

If setting up GA4 sounds like a chore, let the Glowtify team do it. It takes two steps.

  1. Write to cs@glowtify.com and say the site does not have GA4 yet.
  2. Give marketing@glowtify.com access to the Google Analytics property. In GA, go to Admin β†’ Property access management β†’ Add user. Enter marketing@glowtify.com. Give the role Editor (or Administrator if the person prefers).

If GA4 does not exist yet, tell the team in the email. The team can create the property, install the tag on the site (WordPress, Webflow, Shopify, or a custom site), and wire it to Glowtify. Turnaround is usually one business day.

No further action needed from the client side once these two steps are done.

Doing it yourself

Two steps: create the GA4 property, then install the tag on the site.

Step 1: create the property

  1. Go to analytics.google.com and log in with a Google account.
  2. Click Admin (gear icon, bottom left).
  3. Click Create β†’ Property. Give it the site name and time zone.
  4. Fill in the industry, business size, and how the site will be used.
  5. Under Data streams, click Web. Enter the site URL and stream name.
  6. Copy the Measurement ID (starts with G-). Keep it handy for step 2.

Step 2: install the tag on the site

The tag is the code snippet that lets GA4 record what visitors do. The setup depends on the platform.

WordPress

Install the Site Kit by Google plugin. Go to Site Kit β†’ Settings β†’ Connect Google Analytics. Sign in with the same Google account and pick the property. Site Kit adds the tag automatically.

Webflow

Go to Project settings β†’ Integrations β†’ Google Analytics. Paste the Measurement ID (G-XXXXXXX). Publish the site.

Shopify

In the Shopify admin, go to Sales channels β†’ Online Store β†’ Preferences β†’ Google Analytics. Paste the Measurement ID. Save.

Squarespace, Wix, or a custom site

Follow the platform's official Google Analytics guide. Any modern site builder has a field for the Measurement ID.

Any site, via Google Tag Manager (GTM)

If a GTM container is already installed on the site, create a Google Tag inside GTM with the Measurement ID and publish the container. This is the cleanest option for sites that also use other tags (ads, chat widgets, heatmaps).

Verify GA4 is working

Wait 10 minutes after installing the tag. Then go back to GA in the browser and open Reports β†’ Realtime. Load the site in another tab. The Users in the last 30 minutes counter should increment. If it does, GA4 is recording.

If it stays at zero, the tag is likely not on the page. Check the platform integration or ask the person who deployed the site.

Once GA4 is running

Give marketing@glowtify.com access to the property (Admin β†’ Property access management β†’ Add user, role Editor). Then, in Glowtify, connect the property via the Google Analytics connector.

Common questions

Universal Analytics is on the site. Is that fine?

No. Universal Analytics was shut down by Google. Only GA4 works.

GA4 already exists but nobody has access anymore.

Recover the account via Google Account Recovery. If the previous admin left the company, Google can help transfer ownership.

Does GA4 cost anything?

No. GA4 is free at any traffic volume for standard use.

How long before Glowtify sees the data?

Google needs a few hours to start populating GA4 reports. After that, Glowtify pulls fresh data every night.
